June 25 – Higley Flow SP NY
Morning brought an end to the rain with sunny skies and warm temperatures predicted.
Sandy began her day with a walk across the Lake Champlain Bridge. She then joined Bill to tour the British fort on the site, His Majesty’s Fort at Crown Point. This fort was much larger than the French Fort Frederick we toured yesterday. From the road and parking lot it appears to simply be an irregularly shaped hill with a couple of stone columns sticking out of the top. We were surprised as we walked between the ramparts to see two huge sets of two story limestone barracks inside.
One of the barracks was for officers while the other was for enlisted men. Interestingly, the stone chimneys that remained were those of the enlisted barracks. The officers chimneys were more refined and built of brick. After the fort’s closure, people found other uses for the bricks.
From inside the fort the walls didn’t seem very formidable. However, climbing to the top it was clear that the outside, 25 foot high slope was much steeper and the wide, twelve foot deep dry moat next to it would have made it extremely difficult to assault.
We had reservations at Higley Flow SP so we made tracks in that direction. Needing a few grocery items and to get enough phone coverage to do some email, we made a short stop in Lake Placid. A couple approached our parked rig and introduced themselves as fellow Winnebago EKKO owners. We compared notes and gave them a quick tour of our modifications. They have a place on Long Lake and left us an open invite to stay there if we were in the area.
The campground at Higley Flow is lovely. Forested with conifers, there is good privacy between campsites. The place has nice, clean bathrooms and showers. Higley Flow features a nice beach along a reservoir on the Raquette River.
Dinner that evening was pasta with zucchini and red sauce.

Today started out with blue skies then to overcast. Temps in the 70’s. After breakfast we headed to Potsdam for a technology session. We started at McDonalds which is a great place to get free, fast WiFi. We spent quite a bit of time there downloading documents, emailing photos and other needs related to managing Sandy’s cousin’s affairs. Then it was off to the UPS Store to get some of those documents printed. The post office was next and our chores were complete.
Lunch was at Subway where Sandy discovered she could get any of their sandwiches made up as a salad so they could be gluten free. Hurray, a new additions to the lunch stop mix!
Then we indulged in a little antique/thrift store shopping. We found two places downtown but both were disappointing. Quick drives through SUNY Potsdam and Clarkson University campuses finished our time in town. But, Sandy saw a gluten-free bakery as we were leaving and we made a quick stop to buy some goodies.
Dinner was ham steak with green beans and sliced tomatoes.
